Inncoent Kids Game May Have Caused Greek Death

Student Dies of a Lacerated Spleen

A Florida Southern College student was found dead in his apartment Saturday night, and Lakeland police said an autopsy concluded he died of a lacerated spleen.

Micheal Szwed, 22 from Naples, was found unresponsive at his apartment on East Belmar Street by his friends.

Szwed, who was a senior at the college and majoring in communications and marketing, had been on campus "participating in planned recreational events'' on Saturday, a LPD report said.

Around 11 a.m., Szwed complained to friends that he was not feeling well and was taken back to his apartment. Friends left him at his home to recover and when they returned around 10 p.m. that night, they couldn't awaken Szwed, police said.

The events at the school were part of the college's fraternity bid week, said Lee Mayhall, a spokeswoman for the school.

Szwed was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, which was holding a "slip and slide" event that day, she said. Mayhall said she didn't know whether Szwed participated in the event.

An autopsy was performed Sunday and showed that Szwed had a lacerated spleen. The autopsy report won't be available until results of toxicology results are known in several weeks.

How Szwed sustained his injury is still under investigation, said LPD Sgt. Terri Smith, but she said it appears there was no foul play."It doesn't look like there was anything criminally involved," she said Sunday. "It doesn't look like he was attacked or anything like that. They are still doing the investigation."

On Sunday, FSC officials were around campus to help students who were coping with the sudden loss of a classmate, Mayhall said. Several events had been held to help students talk about what was going on."It's devastating," she said. "We are just trying to do the best we can do with the information we have. It has been pretty intense here the past 24 hours. Everybody is still in shock."
