Last night several fraternity and sorority alumni gathered for a fundraising event in Houston. There were at least 8 SigEps, and as many or more from Alpha Chi Omega, along with smaller groups from several other organizations.
The gathering was sponsored by "The Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee" (FratPAC), a group that raises money and distributes it to elect Greeks to the House and Senate and influence legislation that is of interest to Greek organizations.
The focus of last nights was to raise awareness and support for the "Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2007" (H.R. 643/S. 638), a bill that would extend tax deductible status to grants from charitable organizations (e.g. the Educational Foundation) to housing for campus organizations (i.e. fraternity and sorority houses). This bill currently has over 155 sponsors in the House and 31 in the Senate. Because it is a "small" and essentially non-controversial bill it is still in committee until it can be proposed as an amendment to a suitable tax or appropriations bill. We were asked to contact our Senators and Representatives and let them know we support this bill.
If you can take a few minutes to research the bill and contact your members of Congress it will be greatly appreciated. Even better, your chapter will thank you for it!
