USM student honored

Family and friends of a Southern Miss student killed in a traffic accident last August gathered to remember him in a special way today. This afternoon, a magnolia tree was planted on the front lawn of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on the USM campus. The tree and a bench in front of it were dedicated in honor of fraternity member T.J. Thomas, who was killed when his car was hit by an alleged drunk driver in Hattiesburg on August 26, 2006. Friends of the D'Iberville senior say this ceremony shows he will always be remembered. The dedication followed a fundraising event at the fraternity which raised more than $14,000 for a national youth AIDS program.
